the fiend of hip-hop has got me stuck like a crack pipe

Slackin

Happy Holidays! Sorry for the slackin, if you want to understand why I’ve been slow to post at home just know that it took me 2 hours to upload all this with the molasses-like Beverlywood DSL.

Here’s some new(er) music for ya:

Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, and Mos Def (very influential in converting me to hip hop) take Jay Electronica and J. Cole (very influential in keeping me with hip hop) under their wing, only to be outshined by them.

This is the type of lyricism I live for. Featuring a hilarious Jay Electronica reference that I didn’t quite understand at first (“and throw my money on the floor like the Notorious BUM uhh”)

Reflection Eternal ft. Mos Def, Jay Electronica, J. Cole - Just Begun

——-

My buddy Dash put me on to this Los Angeles-based hip hop group Warm Brew. They have a really sick sound, their production value is extremely high quality.

Warm Brew - Doin it Right

Warm Brew - Stand Up

If you’re feelin this download their unofficial EP, just more quality music.

——-

The folks at Adult Swim (known for their embracing of underground hip hop) enlisted some of the best DJs you’ve never heard of, and put them towards remixing a variety of ATL’s hip hop acts.

Goodie Mob - Is That You God? (Daberye remix)

Lil Jon featuring Kee - Give It All You Got (Danger Beach remix)

Young Jeezy - I Got This (El-P remix)

The country-fried slang over futuristic beats is hit or miss, if you’re feelin it head over to Adult Swim to sample more or download the whole thing.

——-

Elzhi’s been doing it for a while, working with the likes of Little Brother and Jake One in the past decade. A really underrated lyricist, check out this song that has Black Milk flippin the same Marlena Shaw sample from Primo’s creation for Guru

Elzhi - Deep (prod. by Black Milk)

My favorite beat off a song on one of my favorite albums of ‘09. The perfect example of what J. Dilla was able to do with a simple soul record; listening to this song is somewhat of a religious experience.

J. Dilla - Believe in God
